Tech and Sporting Trends for 2022 and Beyond

Sports are timeless in the sort of way that makes it easy to forget how technology shapes the way people experience. And yet it does. The bat and ball may be (mostly) the same as they were when you were a kid, but what about the drone in the outfield getting aerial shots? Or the team’s Twitter account that just replied to your message?

Sometimes the tech influence is obvious. Other times it operates behind the scenes, silently enhancing the way you interact with your favorite games. In this article, we take a look at several of the many ways technology is disrupting the sports industry in 2022 and beyond.

AI

AI is already having an impact on sports in the form of automated camera sensors and smart ticketing procedures that make it easier to fill stadiums. The future looks even brighter as AI looks to expand in leaps and bounds over the next decade.

It’s believed that AI could eventually replace living rules officials. It will be difficult for sports fans to boo a computer program out of the stadium, though after a few $12 beers, they might give it a try anyway.

AI also has the potential to make real-time highlight reels, similar to those that your phone might generate. If you’ve ever opened a slideshow made from memories five years ago you know what we are referring to. The tech isn’t perfect. Every once in a while, a blurry picture of someone’s elbow finds its way in. With a little bit of updating, however, compelling content can be created in an instant using only AI.

AI algorithms can also be used as part of training simulations, allowing teams to simulate their rival’s strategies during practices and train more proactively than ever before.

Simulations will also make waves in the stands. AI companies have already begun selling their data to bookmakers to help set odds and formulate conditions for bets. AI predictions are highly advantageous for bookmakers, who can now take even more of the guesswork out of the process.

Fan Interactions

Technology has changed the way that fans interact with their favorite teams. Where support was once limited to the stands, it’s now something that can be shown around the clock. Social media gives be uninterrupted access to their favorite teams.

From a branding perspective, this gives franchises more opportunity than ever before to rile up fans, and potentially sell more tickets and merchandise. It also radically increases the brand value of star athletes, who suddenly fall into the “influencer” category when they gain enough social media followers.

Now, star athletes can increase their fame and make millions in the process through social media-related endorsements. Technology may continue to break down barriers between fans and the sports that they love as new technologies like VR and augmented reality continue to provide new ways for people to enjoy their favorite sports.

New Career Paths

The sports tech revolution is also creating new career paths in the world of sports. Now, teams are looking for programmers, influencers, cyber security professionals, and content creators who understand the world of technology and digital marketing.

For people with a love of sport and tech, it’s the perfect opportunity to marry your twin passions in a career path that is as exciting as it is rewarding. It’s as good a time as there has ever been to take your existing skills and rebrand them in a way that might make your favorite sporting franchise take notice.
