Zozo Championship Preview: Tiger Returns

Last week, Jason Kokrak claimed his first PGA Tour win in 233 starts at the CJ Cup.

This week, the Zozo Championship comes from Sherwood Golf Club in California, where Tiger Woods will be looking to defend his title and break the all time PGA Tour wins record.

Tiger Woods – Matthew Wolff – Xander Schauffele

Woods won last year’s Zozo Championship for his record-tying 82nd PGA Tour victory. He also won five times at Sherwood when it hosted his Hero World Challenge.

Wolff started the season with a runners-up place at both the US Open and the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open. He went to high school just seven miles from Sherwood and attended tournaments there. “I’ve played Sherwood 1,000 times,” Wolff said.

Schauffele has started the season with back-to-back Top 5s, including a runner up at last week’s CJ Cup.

Collin Morikawa – Justin Thomas – Patrick Reed

Morikawa missed the cut in his first two events this season. He finished T12 at last week’s event and has played Sherwood a number of times before.

Thomas has had a strong start this season. He finished eighth at the US Open and T12 at last week’s CJ Cup.

Reed is making his first PGA Tour start since finishing 13th at the US Open. He also finished third recently in the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth.

Webb Simpson – Rory McIlroy – Phil Mickelson

Simpson has made a good start to his season, finishing in the Top 15 in his first two events. The American had two victories last year and will be looking to carry on his great form.

McIlroy is yet to win in 2020 but has been finding some form of late. He finished T8 at the US Open and T21 last week.

Mickelson claimed his second win in two starts on the PGA Tour Champions last week.

Jon Rahm – Justin Rose – Hideki Matsuyama

Rahm has two Top 25 finishes in his first two starts this season. The Spaniard had a strong finish last year with two victories at The Memorial and the BMW Championship.

Rose won the FedEx Cup just two years ago. He is trying to end a winless drought that extends back to the 2019 Farmers Insurance Open.

Matsuyama was runner-up to Woods in last year’s event. He is seeking his first win since 2017.

The Course

Sherwood Country Club is located in California and was designed by the legendary Jack Nicklaus.

The course was opened in 1989 and has hosted several PGA Tour events, including the World Challenge, a PGA Tour-recognised golf tournament hosted by Tiger Woods each December, from 2000 to 2013.

Sherwood has a member invite policy and notable members of the club include: Justin Timberlake, Wayne Gretzky, Sylvester Stallone and Mel Gibson.

With the Zozo Championship being relocated from Japan to Sherwood, due to Covid, experience and course knowledge will be crucial.

Spain’s Jon Rahm will start the event as favourite, but, with such a star-studded field, any number of players could claim the title on Sunday.
