Avanesyan stops Taylor in two rounds in an impressive display

David Avanesyan successfully defended his European Welterweight title at Wembley Arena against Liam Taylor in a controversial second-round stoppage.

The Russian fighter was the main event in Boxxer’s first show with Sky Sports as Chris Eubank’s bout with opponent Anatoli Muratov was called off due to health concerns in a pre-fight medical.

In what was an action-packed encounter between the two fighters, Avanesyan was the better of the two fighters as he landed the more effective punches and his left hook in the second round was stopped perhaps prematurely by the referee, sparking protests from Taylor’s corner.

Avanesyan who last fought in February against Josh Kelly, was making his fifth European title defence on the card and it wouldn’t take long for the fight to catch fire as the bout got off to a fast start, with the two fighters trading punches. It wouldn’t take long before the champion would achieve his first knockdown of the fight and from there he grew from strength to strength.

With David successful in defending his title, there will still be question marks as of whether the fighter who fought in his only world title fight against Lamont Peterson four years ago has what it takes to be a future world champion at 147.

Elsewhere on the card, Richard Riakporhe still had his punching power as he shrugged off some ring rust after almost two years out of the ring as he earnt an unanimous decision win over Poland’s Krzysztof Twardowski. Wins also came for Ebonie Jones on her boxing debut and Germaine Brown getting an important points win in a English Super-Middleweight title final eliminator over Jamal Le Doux.
