Premier League Early Predictions: 2020

The Premier League is the top flight league in Great Britain where England’s top teams compete against one another. Year after year the competition has increased, with the battle for the top spot becoming more interesting. Last season it was Liverpool who were exceptional throughout comfortably winning the League, followed by Manchester City, Manchester United and Chelsea in the top 4.

This season of Premier League has already seen many shocks, unbelievable score lines and unexpected performances. Everton, Aston Villa and Southampton are a few of the teams that have impressed thus far. With the second international break now underway, let’s try to look how the Premier League table could potentially shape up come the end of the 20/21 season.

1. Liverpool

Last season’s champions, Liverpool, look like they might end up with back-to-back consecutive Premier League titles. With Virgil Van Dijk out for most part of the season, as well as other notable injuries to other key defenders, the backline looks susceptible and will be tested greatly throughout the remainder of the season. However the attacking prowess of the Reds will more than likely make up for their shortcomings in defense. After a humiliating loss against Aston Villa things were not looking good but they bounced back and managed a point in the Merseyside Side Derby. With already a win against the likes of Chelsea and Arsenal, Liverpool look like a side capable of defending the title successfully.

After the international break they go against Leicester City, a win potentially leapfrogging the Merseyside club to the top of the table. Currently in 3rd position behind Leicester and Tottenham, with a few savvy changes and re-enforcements in the January window, the Reds could end up as the Premier League Champions once again. Anymore injuries however, especially to the back four, could be catastrophic for Jurgen Klopp’s side.

2. Manchester City

It’s not often we see a Pep Guardiola team sitting at 10th place after seven matches. It is very clear to see that Manchester City are struggling to score goals and yet also keep clean sheets. The absence of Aguero has affected their performance a lot. Going forward they look dangerous no doubt, however are clearly missing the world class goal scoring ability of Aguero. With all the goal scoring pressure on Sterling, his performances have also seen a dip. City are still considered as title contenders but if these performances continue it looks difficult for them.

They have players who can completely change not only a match but the morale and performances of the team. With the likes of Kevin De Bruyne, Raheem Sterling, Mahrez and many others, Pep’s City can never be ruled out off the title race.

3. Chelsea

Chelsea were the biggest spenders in the summer window, getting in world-class players in almost every area of the pitch. Chelsea are yet to find their best form, Lampard’s Chelsea have shown glimpses of what they can do both defensively and going forward. With the quality Chelsea have in the squad, it makes them one of the best in Premier League. Lampard needs to find his best 11, which he has not decided yet.

It’s still not clear who will pair up with Thiago Silva at the back, where Timo Werner fits better as a forward or in a wide position? How to fit Ziyech, Havertz, Mount, Hudson Odoi and Pulisic into the playing 11, who plays and who doesn’t? Many questions have to be answered by Lampard and need to be answered as fast as possible.

4. Leicester City

Leicester City are having an excellent season so far, with 6 wins and 2 losses they sit at top of the Premier League table with a 1 point lead over Tottenham and Liverpool. They have played some good football but at times looked vulnerable nonetheless. An impressive  5-2 win against Manchester City showed what they really can do. Leicester are one of the top scoring teams this season and have also managed 3 clean sheets.

It’s just the start of the season and they are missing some key players like Ndidi and Soyuncu, with their return the squad will only improve. The biggest question is can Leicester City keep this momentum going whilst performing in both the Europa League and Premier League simultaneously. The match against Liverpool will be a good marker, predicting whether Leicester have what it takes to compete for the title once again.

5. Tottenham

What a start for Jose Mourinho and his team. They lost their first match of the season to Everton, who are having one of the best starts to their season. After that it has been uphill for Spurs, winning 5 and drawing 2 in their next 7 matches. They have been scoring goals for fun, the duo of Son and Kane is the most effective one so far this season. In front of goal they have been very good but the defense remains equally bad.

“I could say that this team could be champions in many European countries. It’s so difficult in the Premier League though. So many good clubs. You can have a good season and still not be champions. We’ll just try to win” were the recent words of Jose Mourinho.

Jose’s side is known for having good defence and Spurs fans will be hoping to see their team’s defence get better as the season progresses. With the likes of Kane, Son, Lamela and now Bale, Spurs certainly don’t lack firepower going forward. If they keep playing like this they have a good chance of getting into the top 4.

6. Everton

When the summer window ended, Everton had signed few good players in Allan, Decoure and James Rodriguez. The signing of James was an exciting one for all the Everton fans because no one was quite sure how he will perform. In the first match of the Premier League James showed how good of a player he is and since then he has continued his good form helping Everton to get one of their best starts of the season.

Calvert-Lewin is the player who has surprised not only Everton but other teams fans too with his excellent performances week in week out. Since the suspension of Richarlison, Everton have struggled a bit more and have seen a slight drop in their performances, highlighting how important the Brazilian is for the team. Even though they have had a great start, a top 4 finish is very unlikely.

As for teams like Manchester united and Arsenal if they don’t start to perform the way they should, a place in top 6 will become highly unattainable and simply out of their grasp.
