Barcelona Predicted Lineup for 2021/22 Season

Barcelona are one of the most prestigious and decorated clubs in world football. The last few seasons have particularly not gone their way, winning only a Copa del Rey in two seasons. The past season did not end well for Blaugrana as they missed out on La Liga title to Atletico Madrid as well as a sub par performance in the Champions League.

Last season did bring some hope, with many good performances and getting close to winning La Liga. Ronald Koeman did much better than what was expected. Going into this season, he knows his players quiet well and will look to get the best out of them. Let us look at how Barcelona can lineup with current players and transfer rumors. I will be picking 4-2-3-1 as the formation, to get the most of the forwards.

Barcelona’s Shaky Defense

The back line of Barcelona is one of the weakest areas and the one which is exploited the most. Lining up with a strong backline will provide much more support to the forward players and safety for goalkeeper. The veteran, Pique is set to continue at Camp Nou alongside the pacey Jordi Alba. Pique has been one of the constants in the backline but the question arises who plays next to him at the center back position.

Barcelona signed Eric Garcia from Manchester City on a free transfer. The young Spanish defender has qualities to make it into first team. He faces competition from Lenglet, Umtiti and 2 homegrown players Oscar Mingueza and Ronald Araujo. Oscar, who was one of the bright sparks last season, can even play at right-back at times. Emerson is one of the players who has joined Barcelona and will be a backup for Jordi Alba.

At the right-back position, Barcelona have the likes of Dest and Roberto. Dest who joined last summer was not able to cement his place in starting 11. Oscar Mingueza can play as right back too. Ronald Koeman will most likely go for a back 4, having played back 3 at times in the later stages of La Liga. Let’s see how Barcelona defense can look.

Goalkeeper : Ter Stegen (Pena)

Center Back : Pique (Eric Garcia) with Lenglet (Oscar/Araujo)

Left Back : Jordi Alba (Emerson)

Right Back : Dest (Roberto/Oscar)

The Midfield : Barcelona’s Heart

The midfield has been the most important area of field for Barcelona for years. They want players that can control the ball, pass and carry the ball forward. Blaugrana have produced one of the best midfielders over the years, and with the young players they possess the future looks bright. Busquets is aging but in Euros he was amazing with Spain. Same goes for young Pedri, who won the young player of the tournament at Euros. De Jong, the Dutch magician is yet to reach his best with Barcelona but fans saw glimpses of what he can do in the 2nd half of the season.

“What Pedri has done in these Euros I have never seen with an 18-year-old, not from anyone in the Euros, World Cups, Olympic games, it’s something away from all logic.” Luis Enrique, former Barcelona manager, on how Pedri has outdone all expectations.

Barcelona are struggling financially and have to off-load some players, which includes Pjanic and Coutinho. The Brazilian has failed to make an impact since joining from Liverpool, having a loan spell at Bayern Munich last season. With lack of squad depth in midfield, Barcelona need to bring in a midfielder or keep Coutinho. The fan favorite, Riqui Puig, will probably get his chances this season. Another young player, Ilaix Moriba impressed a lot in later stages. His contract situation is still in air and he could end up leaving the club.

Some new young players have been promoted from Barcelona B, Nico Gonzalez and Alex Collado. Barcelona signed 2 young player namely, Yousef Demir and Kays Ruiz-Atil. The Blaugrana still need to get in a player and let go of some players on big wages. Koeman should lineup with 2 midfielders, to get the maximum from his forwards.

Right Central Midfielder : Sergio Busquets (Pedri/Puig)

Left Central Midfielder : Frenkie De Jong (Puig/Pedri)

Barcelona’s Star Studded Attack

When it comes to forwards Barcelona have the strongest attack, at least on paper. The Spanish side have already signed Aguero from Manchester City and Depay from Lyon, both on a free transfer. Their inclusion increases the depth at front. The Catalans already have players like Griezmann, Dembele, Ansu Fati, Lionel Messi and Martin Braithwaite.

All the players are on heavy wages, which means some of them have to leave this summer. Griezmann is one of the top names to be sold this summer alongside his France teammate, Ousmane Dembele. Rumors of swap deal between Barcelona and Atletico are there but not much progress. Dembele who only has a year left in his contract, is unwilling to sign extension with a wage cut. Expecting the likes of Griezmann and Braithwaite to leave, this is how Catalans attack can look.

Right Attacking Midfielder : Lionel Messi (Dembele)

Attacking Midfielder : Memphis Depay

Left Attacking Midfielder : Ansu Fati (Dembele)

Striker : Aguero (Ansu Fati)

While the transfer window remains open there can be many arrivals and departures at Barcelona still. At the moment, the Blaugrana need a player in attack and midfield on lower wages. The financial conditions are definitely hindering Barcelona’s plans this summer.
