Three Young Players To Watch in The Bundesliga

There are few leagues in world football that give young players the freedom to express themselves more so than the Bundesliga. Germany’s top-flight boasts some of the most impressive young players in world football, with a variety of nationalities represented. But, which young players should fans be most excited to see develop in the 2021-22 season?

Jude Bellingham

There aren’t many more exciting players in the Bundesliga than Jude Bellingham. The 18-year-old played a prominent role throughout the season for Borussia Dortmund last season, and will be vital once again if the club are to defy their Bundesliga odds and lay down a title challenge. He featured 46 times in all competitions. Few would have expected him to play as many games as he did in just his second season at professional level, while he scored four times. His first season with Dortmund came off the back of a very impressive campaign in the Championship with Birmingham City.

Bellingham was very strong throughout Dortmund’s run in the Champions League, and was outstanding in both legs against Manchester City. The 18-year-old has already been rewarded for his strong outings by being called up for England duty, and was part of their squad that reached the final of EURO 2020. Another season of progression is expected this coming year for Bellingham.

Jamal Musiala

Jamal Musiala showed experience beyond his years during his first season in the Bundesliga with Bayern Munich last season. So impressive was his outings that there was a battle between Germany and England to tie him down for international duty. Germany eventually won that battle, and he has featured for the national side on five occasions already.

Musiala possesses all the qualities that are required to compete for first-team opportunities at the Allianz Arena, and more than played his part as the Bavarian giants won the Bundesliga last season. He is expected to be a regular part of the team once again this coming season, as the favourites for the Bundesliga title look to win the league for a tenth consecutive time. Musiala played 26 times in the league, scoring six times, and was comfortable both in the attacking third and carrying out defensive responsibilities. His impression on the team could be furthered this season, as he will be playing under Julian Nagelsmann, who is renowned for giving young players the opportunity to shine.

Christoph Baumgartner

Christoph Baumgartner was one of the standout players for Austria at EURO 2020, and he will look to continue his development this coming season in an exciting Hoffenheim team. The 21-year-old only made his debut in the Bundesliga at the end of the 2018-19 season, and has instantly become an important player in the German club’s team.

Baumgartner enjoyed a fine second full season in the top-flight, as he made 31 appearances in the league, scoring six times. He has abilities at both ends of the pitch, which ensures that he is a player that other clubs will be looking enviously at. He was in fine scoring form at the EUROs this summer, as he scored the winning goal for Austria against Ukraine. Baumgartner’s performances will be integral to Hoffenheim’s chances of qualifying for Europe this season, but his ability both on and off the ball will make him a player that fans will enjoy watching throughout the 2021-22 campaign.
