LaLiga Title Coming Down to a Final Sprint

We’re approaching the final month of the season for LaLiga, but the outright winner has not been determined.

With only a handful of games remaining on the schedule, one slip-up could be the difference between being crowned champion and being leaped over by a competitor.

Currently, Atletico Madrid, Real Madrid, Barcelona and Sevilla are the four remaining teams in the hunt for the league title.

The intensity of each contest is picking up as no team in the top four can allow a loss if they want to win the title. Draws help, but any club losing this late will dramatically impact their chances at winning in 2021.

Focusing on the number one team, Atletico Madrid, they have 5 games remaining. Some of the notable contests include a face-off with Real Sociedad on the 12th of May. But their most important meeting of the season takes place on the 8th of May when they go head-to-head with Barcelona. That fixture could ultimately decide who wins the title.

Like Atletico, Real Madrid has 5 games remaining in LaLiga before the seasons’ end. Their most notable contest of the season will be the 9th of May against Sevilla, another club looking to usurp the remaining competition. What’s interesting about Real Madrid is that they have a Champions League contest scheduled for the 5th of May against Chelsea. Could that impact a much-needed victory against Sevilla?

Barcelona is the only team on this list that has 6 games on their fixture. With a game in hand, that makes their matchup against Atletico Madrid even more important. Other than that specific instance, Barcelona shouldn’t be challenged by their remaining opponents. None of their scheduled fixtures are against teams that will qualify for the Champions League or Europa League. Their only challenging game remaining will be against Atletico Madrid.

Last, but certainly not least, Sevilla is looking to make the jump from 4th to 1st in the final weeks. Sevilla last won LaLiga in 1946. They have a handful of top 4 finishes, but the club is itching to be on top once again.

Sevilla’s only tough fixture ahead will be against Real Madrid on the 9th of May. If they can somehow defeat Real Madrid and Barcelona and Atletico spoil the homestretch, they could be declared champions.

What do the bookmakers think? It shouldn’t come as a surprise that Barcelona is at -200 to win the league title. Separated by two points with 1 game in hand, Barcelona is Betway Sports’ choice to win in 2021.

Sevilla owns the worst odds of the four remaining teams, at +1600. A loss to Real Madrid would seal their fate, which is why their future contest is so important for both clubs.

Atletico sits at the top of the table with 73 points, but that certainly won’t be enough. They managed to defeat Barcelona earlier this season, so they will need to replicate the same success in their future contest.

Barcelona having one game in hand and trailing by only two points is the difference-maker here. Barcelona has conceded only 5 games this season, so their upcoming contest against Atletico will change the outlook for the entire season.

Sevilla is a long shot to win the title, which is understandable. While they have been on an absolute tear as of late, the only way they would truly win is if we saw an epic collapse from Atletico, Real, and Barcelona.

At worst, Sevilla needs those three teams to tie their respective games. That is highly unlikely, so Sevilla needs to capture all 5 remaining victories and receive some help from underachieving teams.

Atletico and Real are two teams to watch as well. If Barca finds a way to lose again to Atletico, that would greatly hurt them from capturing the league title. Real has decent competition down the stretch, with their head-to-head meeting with Sevilla being the biggest fixture of their season.

It will be a wild finish to the league trophy. There is no room for error, which makes for exciting football. A season that is traditionally won in marathon form has come down to the last leg. The final sprint towards a league title and the top spot is on the horizon. But which club is conditioned for the final dash?

Barcelona owns the best odds, but cannot afford a hiccup. No team in the top 4 can trip now. LaLiga football will be must-see tv during May.
