Euro 2020: Hungary vs Portugal Preview

Portugal’s Euros title defence will kick off at 5pm this evening on ITV against Hungary in Group F.

The predicted Line-ups for both teams battling it out in Budapest look like this…

Portugal Predicted XI: Patricio; Semedo, Ruben Dias, Pepe, Guerrerio; Bruno Fernandes, Renato Sanches, Palhinha; Bernardo Silva, Cristiano Ronaldo, Diogo Jota

Hungary predicted XI: Gulacsi; Fiola, Orban, Attila Szalai; Lovrencsics, Kleinheisler, Adam Nagy, Schafer, Holender; Roland Sallai, Adam Szalai

Portugal will look to begin their title defence with a win over Hungary which on paper is their easiest group match due to having World Cup champions France and former winners Germany. However, Portugal’s preparations were disrupted this weekend when Man City defender Joao Cancelo tested positive for Covid-19 and had to be replaced in the squad by Man United’s Diogo Dalot.

Hungary on the other hand, who finished 3rd in the Euro’s back in 1964, and 4th eight years later in 1972, are playing in only their fourth European Championships. They reached the last 16 in Euro 2016, where they faced Portugal in the group stages with the game ending 3-3, where Hungary took the lead all 3 times.

Head-to-head

  • Hungary have never won against Portugal in their 13 attempts. Portugal having won 9 and having a stalemate 4 times.

Portugal

  • Not including penalty shootouts, Portugal are unbeaten in their last 11 games at the European Championships. Only Spain have had a longer spell without a loss in the history of the tournament (14). Meaning if Portugal go unbeaten in the group stage of this tournament, they will equal that record.
  • Portugal are the only team to reach the knockout stages in each of the last six European Championships, a run stretching back to 1996.
  • Portugal has a 100% record of progressing out of the group stages (seven out of seven.)

Hungary

  •  Hungary have qualified for back-to-back Championships. After having only played in 2 of the previous 14 tournaments (1964, 1972)
  • Centre-back Willi Orban was Hungary’s top scorer in qualifying. All 3 of his goals came from set pieces.
