What will be Cristiano Ronaldo’s next club?

Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo has had an individually brilliant season for the Red Devils despite the team’s underachievements.

The Portuguese legend has netted 24 goals upon his return to Old Trafford in the summer, yet United have not qualified for next seasons UEFA Champions League.

Ronaldo (37) is the Champions League’s all-time top goalscorer with 140 in the competition’s history.

Manchester United will begin their extensive rebuild under Erik Ten Haag next season without the carrot of top-level European football.

With that in mind, let’s look at the next possible destinations for Ronaldo if he decides to leave Old Trafford this summer…

1. Bayern Munich

The German Bavarian giants are an attractive proposition for any player, this year they claimed their tenth straight Bundesliga title.

Although the appeal of winning a German Bundesliga probably won’t be too high on Ronaldo’s bucket list, Bayern is a steady club to go far in next season’s Champions League.

Bayern has never previously been a realistic destination for Ronaldo as lethal Polish striker Robert Lewandowski has occupied the main-striker role since 2014.

However, Lewandowski’s contract talks have stalled in recent months and heavy rumours of interest from Barcelona are circulating.

With only one year remaining on his contract at Bayern, it could be the only time to cash in on the 33-year-old goalscoring machine.

If Bayern sell Lewandowski this summer, Ronaldo could be an incredible short-term replacement in the goals department, and the service he would be given is a frightening thought for any defence.

2. Paris Saint-Germain

Perhaps the only club left who could realistically afford Ronaldo’s monstrous wages, PSG would be another destination for Ronaldo to try and win another UCL title.

Despite PSG spending heavily in the transfer market, they are yet to lift the coveted Champions League trophy and with Kylian Mbappe looking more and more likely to leave for Real Madrid in the summer. Ronaldo could bring the experience of winning the competition and finally be the man to secure it for the Parisians.

This would also see Ronaldo finally playing alongside arch Ballon d’or rival Lionel Messi – a sight every football fan would love to watch.

3. Sporting Lisbon

Finally, a romantic return to where it all began could also be an attractive option for the Portuguese star.

Ronaldo left Sporting Lisbon in 2003 for his big move to Manchester United, but he did not win the Portuguese title during his solitary season with the Lisbon Lions.

Ronaldo has since secured his place as Portugal’s greatest-ever player winning the Euros in 2016 and becoming the country’s most capped player, as well as their record goalscorer with 186 appearances and 115 goals.

Sporting looks set to secure Champions league football for next season, another box ticked to attract the striker to his homeland.

The move would certainly please Ronaldo’s mother Maria who has previously said: “Son, before I die, I want to see you return to Sporting”.

Maybe a homecomings last dance is in store for Cristiano Ronaldo?
