The Juggernaut raises his stock in a knockout win

British Heavyweight prospect Joe Joyce continues his unbeaten record despite his controversial stoppage in the sixth round against Carlos Takam.

The London fighter who fought in front of his hometown crowd at Wembley Arena, won his bout on Saturday night via referee stoppage in round six, as the left hook from the Juggernaut at the beginning of the round set him on his way to victory.

Takam whose previous opponents included current unified heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua and Derek Chisora in which he both lost in the UK, put on a brave effort, and felt he should have been given a benefit of a doubt at the time of the stoppage.

In round one and throughout the earlier rounds, Joyce was able to establish the jab throughout to keep Carlos at bay but towards the end of the round Takam would finish the first round strongly with the right hand.

The Frenchman would continue to make combinations to the body of his British opponent, taking advantage of his opponents’ static approach and some would say that he did enough to win the round.

As the fight went on, the two fighters would continue to trade punches especially Joyce as he was beginning to grow into the fight as he put body shots together. Takam continued to put in a valiant effort, but it wasn’t enough to take a win as the home fighter increases his record to 15-0.

The win by Joe Joyce will almost certainly guarantee him a mandatory world title shot soon, especially as he could face the winner of Joshua v Usyk in September. Whilst this victory helped to increase his stock in the sport especially through a stoppage, some would point out that this was a somewhat lacklustre performance on the night as he was suspect in getting exposed to the right-hand and being robotic in his approach.

With ambitions set on getting a world title, he would have to show more than what he did on the night but with competition increasing and momentum on his side, he may have to wait a while before he gets that opportunity.

We hope you enjoyed the article ‘The Juggernaut raises his stock in a knockout win.’ Do you think Joyce can be a future heavyweight champion?
